Welcome to Dunnings
Squash & Racketball Club (DSRC)
Squash has been played at Dunnings in East Grinstead for over 30 Years. It has been one of the leading clubs in Sussex running 14 teams (mens, ladies and junior) in the Sussex leagues with over 150 members and continues to develop leading junior squash players. More recently it has added racketball to its activities and now runs internal leagues and a team which completes against other clubs.
Unfortunately the former commercially owned home of the players, Dunnings Mill Squash and Health Club, was closed in July 2008 for residential development of the site. Access to the old courts was available on a short lease until end of May 2009.
The players formed Dunnings Squash & Racketball Club (DSRC) in March 2008 to continue to run both Squash & Racketball Leagues and teams and to plan for the future to ensure that new facilities are provided to sustain squash and racketball in the East Grinstead area.
From June 09 DSRC has squash playing arrangements with the local authority leisure centres (Olympos) in the area. Because of the lack of court capacity in the East Grinstead area, DSRC members who continue in DSRC leagues and teams are fragmented between several locations and clubs in the area.
Plans are in place to build new Squash & Racketball facilities at East Grinstead Sports Club and updates will be available on this website. About the Club
Dunnings Squash and Racketball Club has a long and successful history dating back to when it first opened in 1977. At that point, the club had over 400 playing in the leagues and a waiting list of 200! Within 10 years, the standard at the club was incredibly high and we won the coveted American Express Premier Squash League title in March 1987.
Standards
Over the years, the standard of squash has remained exceptional, with the club fielding 8 men's teams, 3 ladies' teams and a variety of junior teams and age ranges in the Sussex leagues. This competitive nature with other clubs in the area is matched by the club's internal competitive spirit with our own leagues and tournaments.
Recently racketball has grown in popularity and we now run separate racketball leagues and tournaments throughout the year.
Our successes continue and we now enter the National Club Championships for both squash and racketball, and we currently hold the Men's Over 55 Plate for squash and the Racketball Plate trophies.
Social
But Dunnings' members not only want to compete, they want to have fun doing it - whether this is fancy dress parties, line dancing evenings, summer handicap tournaments, team barbecues, the annual Christmas knock around (wearing Wellington boots, playing with old racquets or maybe an eye patch), father and son entries in the doubles tournaments, quiz nights or just general heckling whilst watching a match or after the game at the bar.
The heart of Dunnings Squash and Racketball Club has always been the people - many existing players have been members at the club for 20 years or more. People do leave the area, change clubs etc but it's funny how many people eventually return to the club and say they missed its unique spirit and camaraderie.
Family friendly
Junior squash has always played a very important role at Dunnings. We pride ourselves on being a family club where children can learn that sport and exercise is fun. We're now seeing a third generation of juniors coming through - kids who are supported by their parents and grandparents who have been or still are members.
The juniors have their own teams and leagues, teaching them the benefits of competitive sport and playing together as a team. Dunnings has qualified England Squash coaches, teaching the children from the age of 5, based around the concept of 'mini squash' (more information can be found at http://www.englandsquash.com). Then our young players progress into the junior squads, leagues and teams and then continue to join the adult teams - enjoying competition with one another and against other clubs.
Dunnings has seen a number of its juniors go on to represent not only Sussex at county level, but also England in the international arena.
For over 30 years, Dunnings has been welcoming people of all ages and abilities and hundreds have benefited from the fun, friendly and competitive atmosphere. We just love our sports and invite anyone who wants to play to join us - the more the merrier!
